Saxony's Entrepreneur of the Year

Max Jankowsky, Managing Director of GL Gießerei Lößnitz in the Erzgebirge Mountains, is trimming the tradition-steeped company to climate-neutral sustainability. For this, the 27-year-old was nominated for the "Entrepreneur of the Year" business award.

Saxony's Entrepreneur of the Year

The young foundry boss, who has been managing director of the family business together with Jörg Kattermann (38) since the beginning of 2020, is pursuing a sustainability strategy out of conviction. "Climate change is the greatest challenge facing mankind," explains Jankowsky. For a classic iron foundry that mainly produces molding and pressing tools for the automotive industry, climate-neutral production is no simple matter. A modern dust removal and exhaust air purification system was already put into operation in 2017, in which around five million euros were invested. In addition, the process heat of the melting furnace is optimally utilized. "Even the shower water in the sanitary area is heated with the waste heat," Jankowsky tells us. "We are making an effort to become more and more energy efficient."

The two managing directors had the company's carbon footprint determined. By purchasing nearly 2,000 climate protection certificates, the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the company were offset for the year 2020. This year, the consumption of the fuel coke, which is used to operate the smelting furnace, will also be offset. "Then we will voluntarily offset another 7000 tons of CO," says Jankowsky. The foundry's clientele takes a positive view. "The car companies have their sustainability strategies. They are happy when the supplier comes to them with its own concept," says the foundry boss.

Jankowski sums up his entrepreneurial passion in one sentence: "I want to make this industry a bit more attractive. Don't ask what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country!"
